Free No More: Blekko’s SEO Tools Are Now A Paid Product

Blekko has changed its previously free SEO tools into a paid service, putting it in competition with the likes of SEOmoz.org, Ahrefs.com, MajesticSEO.com, SEMrush.com and other SEO data/tool providers.
There’s been no official announcement of the change, but Blekko CEO Rich Skrenta confirmed to us that the company’s SEO tools and data now require a $99 monthly subscription.
Users trying to access the SEO data — either by directly using Blekko’s /seo slashtag or by clicking on the “SEO” link that appears beneath each listing on a search results page — have been surprised to be prompted to sign-up for the new paid service. This is the messaging that Blekko shows to anyone trying to access SEO data.

Blekko is currently offering only one price point, and its $99 monthly price is comparable to other paid SEO data/tool providers. At SEOmoz, plans range from $99/month to $499/month. At Majestic SEO, the range is $50/month to $400/month. Ahrefs has plans that range from $49/month to $499/month. And paid plans at SEMrush range from $80/month to $150/month.
Skrenta explained via e-mail why he believes that Blekko’s data and tools are different:
We offer the only web-wide set of ranking, backlinks, anchortext, duptext, and other associated raw ranking data which is validated by an associated search index.
He also tells us that the team is currently working on a set of upgrades that should be complete later this year.
Blekko has been offering SEO data since 2010, and industry reaction to it has generally been positive. But that was when it was free. And as SEOs have been noticing the switch to a paid model this week, there’s already been pushback, particularly to the lack of announcements about the change. (I’ve also seen some SEOs say that the switch to a paid model doesn’t fit with No. 7 on Blekko’s “Bill of Rights,” which says “Search engine tools shall be open to all.”)
The SEO industry has clearly shown that there’s plenty of demand for paid data and tools so, while the switch to a paid model is logical from a business sense, the lack of advance warning won’t help Blekko’s cause. But ultimately what matters the most is whether SEOs find enough value in the data and tools that Blekko offers and the price that it’s asking.

Google Trounces Other Local Search Providers In UK

Google has the most complete and accurate local search database in the UK, according to data and analytics firm Implied Intelligence. Previously we’ve published comparable US reports by the company:
In these earlier US tests, yellow pages sites (i.e., Superpages) and Bing beat Google for completeness and data quality. However in the UK Google comes out on top.
To conduct the test (performed in May) the firm created a sample of 1,400 local business records. Each of these local businesses had websites. Listings were “hand checked” and verified. All the records included a name, address, telephone number and additional attributes (e.g., hours of operation). The test only included independent local businesses; franchises or chain stores were excluded.
Implied Intelligence scored each of the directory and local sites on a scale of 1 (worst) to 5 (best) according to the following criteria:
  • Record coverage
  • Number of duplicates
  • Phone errors
  • Address errors
  • Coverage re homepage URL
  • Accuracy re homepage URL
  • Number of records with opening hours
  • Number of records with additional information
Google was the site that offered the highest percentage of matches with the Implied Intelligence database. However it only had 58.8 percent of the 1,400 listings. Next best in coverage were 192.com and then Hotfrog. Google, Yell/hibu and Bing had the best URL coverage. The directory with the highest percentage of incorrect phone numbers was The Phone Book from BT (a carrier). And the site that had more rich content (beyond reviews or check-ins) than any other was Yelp, followed by Hotfrog.

Yahoo Answers Hits 300 Million Questions, But Q&A Activity Is Declining

Against what could be considered great odds, Yahoo Answers has reached a pretty stunning milestone: 300 million questions have been asked since the service launched in 2005.
But despite that figure, activity on Yahoo Answers is on the decline.
The company’s announcement today includes these additional statistics:
On average, 2 questions are being asked and 6 answered per second. So this means there’s an astonishing 7,000 questions and an incredible 21,000 answers per hour.
That’s a total of 28,000 questions and answers being posted every hour.
But about two years ago, when Yahoo Answers announced that it had a combination of more than a billion questions and answers, the company said it was seeing more than 34,000 questions and answers per hour.
That’s a decline in the neighborhood of 17 to 18 percent.

Yahoo Answers has, for years, been considered the largest answer search engine on the web — and despite that decline, it almost certainly still is. But it’s difficult to compare apples to apples if you include sites like ChaCha, which includes voice-generated questions requesting phone numbers among its Q&A database, or Ask.com, which remains something of a hybrid between a Q&A site and a search engine.
Still, Yahoo Answers outlasted Google Answers, which closed its doors less than a year after Yahoo Answers launched. Facebook Questions launched about two years ago, but that doesn’t appear to have taken off like some expected it would.

Quora has become a Q&A darling over the past year or so, and certainly has a lot of momentum in its favor. The company hasn’t indicated how many questions it has, but users have tried figuring it out themselves, using a “QID” code that’s visible in the site’s code. If that’s an accurate way to count questions, my quick digging suggests that the site has a little more than 700,000 questions at the moment.

Earlier this year, former Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson promised to shut down up to 50 Yahoo properties. No one knows if current CEO Ross Levinsohn will follow through on that, but for now, Yahoo Answers keeps beating the odds and chugging along … albeit a little more slowly than it did a couple years ago.

Google’s Unnatural Links Messages: The Shot Heard 'round the SEO World?

More Advertisers Flocking to Facebook Despite Rising Ad Costs [Report]

Over the past year, the cost of Facebook Ads has increased in just about every way possible, with CPM, CPC, and Cost per Fan all up from Q1 2011. Even so, Facebook is earning more from Marketplace ads, says TBG Digital’s Q1 2012 Global Facebook Advertising Report.

Costs per click are up 23 percent across the five territories evaluated by TBG: Canada, France, Germany, UK, and US. Advertisers in France saw the biggest CPC jump, with Q1 2012 rates 35 percent higher YoY. TBG hypothesizes that an imbalance in Facebook ads supply and demand could be driving the increasing CPCs.

Because TBG uses confidential data from 235 clients in 190 countries, actual CPC values have been removed from the chart. These figures, however, reflect data collected from over 268 billion impressions served in the five countries indicated above.

On average, CPMs (cost per thousand impressions) rose 41 percent over the same quarter last year, an increase of 15 percent since Q4 2011.

It is best practice to test keywords in various match types and to make sure you always have a well-developed negative keyword list. You can generate keyword ideas from the keyword tool in Google AdWords, or the Google Insights tool for suggestions and related searches. There are various keyword match types that must be taken into consideration when inputting – broad matches, broad match modifiers (using plus signs), phrase matches (using parenthesis), exact matches (using brackets), and negative matches are some of the various types out there. You must also go back and review the aforementioned funnel to strategize some general and/or specific keyword match types that makes the most sense depending on the level in the funnel you are at.

To devise the most optimal set of keywords, they must be scrutinized on a regular basis depending on the size of your campaign.

3 More Studies Examine Wikipedia’s Page 1 Google Rankings

Wikipedia is highly visible in Google search results, though not nearly as much as Intelligent Positioning reported in February. Even in the case of one-word search queries, Wikipedia results appear on the first page 8 out of 10 times, not 99 percent of the time as IP suggested, according to a new study by Conductor.
In Wikipedia in the SERPs, Conductor offered another look at the Wikipedia/Google bias issue. Their findings are similar to those of our recent Search Engine Watch study, though the scope of Conductor’s report is slightly different; where we examined Wikipedia results on Google vs. Bing, they broke queries out into transactional vs. informational. This segmentation allows for a better look into Wikipedia distribution according to how people actually search.
Slingshot SEO and SpyFu also threw their hats in the ring; Slingshot in an examination of a slightly larger keyword sample size and SpyFu with a historical look at Wikipedia rankings over the last five years.

Wikipedia Results in Google Top 10 for 60 Percent of Informational Queries

Conductor found that Wikipedia results are more prevalent for informational queries, ranking on the first page 60 percent of the time. For searchers seeking information, this is indeed a logical result.
For transactional queries, ie.: “boots on sale” or “where can I buy a black ereader,” Wikipedia still appears on the front page 34 percent of the time.
"I think this study highlights the importance of looking at Wikipedia results based on the intent of the query," Nathan Safran, Director of Research at Conductor, told SEW. "The same holds true for the length of the query."

Wikipedia Dominates for 1-Word Searches, Often Takes Top Spots

Intelligent Positioning had found that Wikipedia results appeared on Google’s first search engine results page 99 percent of the time. Not so, says Conductor.

We did see questions and criticisms after that first study, based on their keyword generation method; they used a random noun generator. Conductor used Google Suggest, keyword research website Soovle, and the Google AdWords keyword tool to populate their lists of search terms. In their report, they note that, “Care was taken to mix high volume searches with lower-volume, self-generated queries to produce a balanced keyword list that is reflective of what actual searcher activity might look like.”
In this study, Conductor found that Wikipedia ranked in the top 10, on the first page, for 85 percent of informational and 73 percent of transactional one-word queries. They do note that it is more difficult to determine searcher intent with a one-word query; at two words, there was a significant drop in Wikipedia’s dominance of Google.

Where Wikipedia did appear on the first page on Google, it often took one of the top three positions, where most clicks occur. Even in transactional searches, Wikipedia was one of the top three results 63 percent of the time. Similarly, 66 percent of informational queries brought back Wikipedia results in the top three.
In our SEW study, our findings were similar, with Google showing Wikipedia results in one of the top three positions 70 percent of the time. Bing, however, did so even more often; 79 percent of searches showed Wikipedia in the top three on that engine.
Conductor analyzed 2,000 informational and transactional queries: 1,000 keywords each for informational and transactional queries. In the report, they note that “an analysis of a subset of navigational keywords showed Wikipedia was largely not visible for these kinds of queries, so we did not complete a full analysis of these terms.”

In February 2012, U.S. searchers conducted 371 million news related searches on search engines, as defined by comScore’s intent categorization methodology, which accounted for 2.3 percent of all search engines searches performed during the month.

But searches performed on non-search engine news sites actually outdistanced search engines news search, totaling 581 million searches in February. Although search engines play an integral role in the news discovery process, the actual news providers and aggregators are still leading the pack.

Behaviorally speaking, it appears that consumers of news data are still more likely to go directly to a “news” specific search engine than they are to run news searches on search engines themselves. The vertical nature of these sites appears to resonate with the searchers, as news searchers are less interested in extraneous results for their news searches that they may get on the broader search engines (e.g., Whitney Houston CDs being sold right next to the news article they want to read regarding her funeral).Read more.......
